About thirty people gathered this Monday at the coffee shop to hear and critique five readers. Here’s a bit about the meeting:

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

There is only one week remaining to submit entries to the Henderson Writers’ Group Anthology. Please email submissions to Audrey at audrey101 [at] aol [dot] com. Make sure to have them in before midnight of October 28th! If you didn’t receive the submission guidelines, email Audrey and she’ll get them to you.

NaNoWriMo is coming up (that’s November, also called National Novel Writing Month). The goal is 50,000 words in 30 days. Hundreds of folks from Nevada have signed up (including me!). You can check out the national website at http://nanowrimo.org/

The Battle Born Book Festival, December 7th, is open to anyone with a book referencing or set in Nevada. Email Gregory (gregory [at] kompes [dot] com) for the rules & application information. Also, if you’re a member of the group, send your updated bios of up to 200 words to Gregory for the website.

Congratulations to Alba Arango on the release of her newest book to Amazon, “The Secret of the Lady Ghost.”
Congratulations to Ray Katz on the release of his book to Amazon, “My Enemy’s Enemy.“
Congratulations to Darlien Breeze on a great time at the book festival in Utah, where she gave a good presentation (and was invited to return next year).
Congratulations to Laura Alton on good feedback on her book.
WRITING TIP from Jo Wilkins:
A tip about story arcs. If you write opposing characters that all have a strong story to tell, try writing them in story arcs. Write each story as a standalone around the same plotline, and when finished weave them together throughout the manuscript. If, or when, the story lines merge write from the point of view of the character that will be affected the most from the scene or chapter.

According to WD, in this tutorial “Chuck Sambuchino gives a clear, step-by-step process for tackling your synopsis, no matter what the length requirement, as well as examples of good and bad synopses.”

These tutorials are an excellent way to learn more about our craft – at our own pace – and, for very little money.

  1. Hi Jenny,

    Any word on a vote regarding the request for readers to warn if their material has excessive violence or explicit sexual content? I think the majority would approve. Also, since porn is a limited field, maybe those interested in writing and reading it should have their own time slot? At any rate, it should certainly be discussed. Don’t you think?
